St Gengoux is a large town of 1085 inhabitants and the administrative centre of the district, situated at the centre of the Saone et Loire department, this town has been ,since the Roman period, a important crossing point and place to stay.
In the X th century, the monks of Cluny founded a priory and gave it the name of St Gengoul.
The church, which was built in the XII th century by the monks of Cluny, has been revised in the XVI th century: Romanesque transept, beautiful vaulted spherical roof and massive octagonal bell tower whose 2 lower floors, which have been preserved, date from the very end of the Romanesque period.

Today it is pleasant to saunter through the narrow streets with names that conjure up the medieval past and discover the remains of its rich heritage.(church with Romanesque bell tower, fortifications and houses).
