SAINT-HYPPOLITE

St Hippolyte was an important deanery of Cluny. This church is composed of three naves, now collapsed. It was surrounded at the end of the XII th century by a strong fortification. One can still see the bell tower built around the year 100, in the middle of the great rectangular tower that is on the top of the transept. Columns of the nave are still visible today at the entrance of a field which is situated South of the deanery porch. Notice,to the West,a rare barn of the XIII th century. History tells us that, around 1180, the Abbot of Cluny and the Lord of Brançion, who had for once agreed on something, had planned to create at St Hippolyte “The New Town” in order to replace St Gengoux that the king of France had reclaimed. There are no traces of this project.

Its sloping basis and its decoration in walled arches make of this church an exceptional edifice. The three naves and their huge cylindrical columns are similar to those in St Philibert Abbey in Tournus. This church is the best illustration today of Cluny II, now disappeared.
